What is 550 Paracord?

Paracord, also known as parachute cord, is a type of lightweight nylon rope that was originally used in the suspension lines of parachutes. It is known for its strength, durability, and versatility, and is now used for a wide range of applications, from outdoor activities like camping and hiking, to crafting and DIY projects.

The ‘550’ refers to to the minimum breaking strength of the cord, which is 550 pounds (249 kg). Also known as Type III paracord is made up of a kernmantle construction, which means it has a core (kern) of seven twisted nylon strands, surrounded by a braided outer sheath (mantle). The inner strands can be removed and used separately, giving the paracord added versatility. The outer sheath is also made of nylon and can be used for various purposes, such as fishing line or sewing thread.
